Tanks With Overflows
A tank with a built-in overflow will make it easy to add a sump filter below the tank. Sump filters are most commonly used in saltwater systems but they can also be used for freshwater. There are several advantages to using a sump in a saltwater system. It will allow you to add a powerful water pump below the tank instead of inside the tank. You can also house your protein skimmer, heater, and filtration media below the tank. The sump will also provide an additional reservoir of water to the system which increases stability, and keeps the water level in the display tank the same all of the time. Tanks with overflows provide a drain so that water flows to the sump via gravity, and the water is re-circulated back to the tank via the water pump.
