Purchasing New Fish

Keeping healthy fish begins with the purchase of quality fish. Be sure to purchase fish from a store in which the tanks look clean and the fish well taken care of. Inspect the tank you are buying from to be sure that the fish are swimming normally and do not have any symptoms of disease. You can also rely on the dealer's advice. A reputable dealer will quarantine unhealthy tanks so that the fish will not be available for sale.

Acclimation: When you buy new fish, the following procedure should be used to ensure that they adjust properly to the new tank.

1. Take your fish home as soon a possible. Elmer's Aquarium packs fish in a plastic bags with enough air to last 4 to 5 hours, but the longer the fish remain in the bag, the greater the risk. If you live out of town, let us know so that we can pack your fish for up to 10 hours. Avoid overheating or chilling the fish on the way home, as their water temperature must remain within 70-80 degrees. Styrofoam carrying cases are available upon request at no charge with any fish purchase.

2. When you get home, float the unopened bag in the aquarium for 15-20 minutes. This allows the temperature to adjust slowly. After 20 minutes, open the bag and allow the fish to swim free. (We have found that a longer acclamation period and mixing water provides no significant benefit.)

3. It will take a few days for your fish to adjust to their new environment. Give them plenty of hiding spots and, if possible keep the aquarium covered, as some fish have a tendency to jump during this period.

4. (Optional) When several fish are added at one time, a dose of medication can be added as a preventative measure. To prevent possible external parasite diseases add a dose of  Quick Cure.
