Discus
| This fish is often called the King of the Aquarium
fish because of its beautiful colors and majestic behavior. Discus are members
of the cichlid family. They are native to South America. All discus
sold at Elmer's are domestically bred. Compatibility/ Behavior: Slow moving, peaceful and shy fish. Discus
are one of the most beautiful tropical fish and should be given a tank
designed for their special needs. They should not be put in a traditional
community tank. They are best kept in a "Discus Only" tank. Housing: Discus are not for everyone, but if you have the proper set-up and feed them well you will be rewarded with a beautiful tank. For success with discus their special care requirements should be met. Keep the water sparkling clean and provide plenty of filtration. We recommend the use of activated carbon in your filter. The require warm water. Keep the temperature 85-88 degrees. Maintain a pH of 6.6-7.0. Adult discus should have at least a 55 gallon tank. Do partial water changes (25%) weekly. Some hobbyist use bottled water, or De-Ionized water with their discus. Size: Grows to 10" Longevity: 6-9 years. Breeding: A challenging fish to breed. Refer to aquarium literature for more information. We have several good books at the store.- Generally they can not be sexed in the store. Notes: Discus are sensitive fish that must be kept
under ideal conditions or they will be prone to diseases. A sick discus
will turn black. Always raise temperature to at least 88 degrees for treatment.
Discus will tolerate temperatures of 90 degrees for
