Silver Arawana
General: These fish are not for beginners, but they make beautiful
show fish if kept under the right conditions. Compatibility/Behavior: A slow moving top dwelling fish. Arawanas will not bother anything that they can not swallow. Young specimens are very fragile and we recommend you keep them by themselves or with other very peaceful fish (such as neons.) As they grow they can be moved to larger quarters. Medium sized arawanas (4-6") can be kept with gouramis and peaceful cichlids. But for best results keep them by themselves, or with calm tank-mates such as silver dollars, small pacus and loaches. Large arawanas should be housed by themselves or with other large fish that will not bother them. Good tank mates are gars, plecostomus, oscars, juruparis, tinfoil barbs and silver dollars. Not recommended with Jack Dempseys, red devils or snakeheads. Arawanas are best kept by themselves. (Community #9) |

Tank Conditions: Young specimens are very delicate and they should have a small tank (10 gallons). Keep temperature at 80-85 degrees with a few floating plants. Best kept by themselves. (Note: do not attempt to mix a baby arawana in a standard community tank, for it will only survive a short while. Medium sized arawanas (4-7 inches) can be kept in standard tanks. All arawanas are jumpers and require a tight cover.
Feeding: Feed once a day. Baby arawanas will absorb their yolk sac. Afterwards they can be given live brine shrimp. Once they reach a few inches in size they will accept live guppies. Adult arawanas will eat a variety of foods. We recommend live goldfish.
Growth/Color: A quick grower that will grow as large as the tank allows. Large public aquariums have specimens that are 45" long.
Breeding: We can not sex these in the store.
Baby Arawanas: Young absorb yolk sac, and then begin to feed. Keep by themselves in a small tank until they are actively feeding on their own. Feed guppies, plankton, brine shrimp., provide floating vegetation.
